DO-IT-YOURSELF ALLERGY TESTING
The following excerpt is from the online free read self help book, Be Your Own Therapist.
CAUTION- before any major change in
diet, consult with your physician.
Doing the testing yourself for addictive food allergy is not that difficult; our bodies show stronger reactions to such substances after their consumption has been stopped for five or more days. Four possible testing methods:
(1) Dr. Mandell offers a five-day fast (Mandell and Scanlon 1979, 251) as one test alternative to make sure that no offending substances are consumed. After five days one food at a time is reintroduced (one meal = only one food) and the bodily reactions noted (including handwriting).
(2) A second alternative suggested, (Mandell and Scanlon 1979, 38), is a Rotary Diversified Diet. For five days one food is eaten at each meal (one meal = only one food), and this food is then repeated as the only food eaten at a particular meal five days later. Bodily reactions are noted.
|Depression, anger, and headaches are frequently caused by food allergies/ intolerances. Why not do your own free testing to see if that is happening with you?
(3) For those who are a bit lazier (like me), another alternative (which may contain accuracy pitfalls) is to consume only 1-2 foods for five days. Perhaps you might select lamb and rice or just rice without spices, oils, or dressings of any kind. (For most people rice is an unlikely allergy, and addictive allergy to lamb is unlikely because we rarely consume it.) Complex foods such as bread, casseroles, sauces etc. CANNOT be used as one of these 1-2 foods, because they contain several foods to which we may be allergic. Likewise, none on the list of most commonly encountered food offenders listed in Chapter 6 should be one of these 1-2 foods. After five days those 1-2 foods are stopped, and reactions are noted as one new food at a time is reintroduced.
(4) To test for one particular food, eliminate it entirely from your diet for five days and then reintroduce it to your diet. This may require close examination of all food labels in order to eliminate that one food for five days. Total elimination is essential; even the smallest amount of cheating, intended or unintended, will invalidate the test.
My personal recommendation, after trying the fasting method, would be to avoid the fast. (If you choose fasting, please read Dr. Mandell's four fasting cautions and warnings; and a consultation with your own physician beforehand is recommended.) Aside from physical weakness, my withdrawal symptoms of 'yuckiness' and 'irritability' were distinctly unpleasant during my fast. My hunger pangs were not difficult because I knew not to 'cheat' by stealing even a nibble; for cheating makes such hunger pangs rage to the extent that one might well have to give up a fast entirely. Without cheating, such hunger pains dissipate after a day or so. There are both pleasant and unpleasant reactions encountered in this allergy testing. The removal of those foods to which you are addictively allergic may cause both physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms, but ridding your system of substances to which you are allergic will tend to promote a strong sense of well-being. So do not expect that you will feel as usual in the process of testing no matter what method of testing you choose. For you may feel much better, you may feel somewhat worse, or you may feel both better and worse simultaneously.
|It is a common belief that we know most of the foods to which we are allergic or are intolerant. WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!|
