IS MYSTERY MEAT YOUR PROBLEM?
The following excerpt is from the online free read self help book, Be Your Own Therapist.
Are any of these problems yours?
Depressed, Alcohol, Irritable, Overweight, Uncontrolled Angry Outbursts, Tense, Compulsive Eating, Headaches, Schizophrenia, Insomnia, Hyperactive, Anxious, Learning Problems, Confused, Asthma, Blurred Vision, Night Sweats, Nervous Stomach, Adult Acne, Fatigue, Poor Memory ???
Do you remember that strange meat-loaf-like dish they always
served at Thursday lunch in school and military cafeterias? To
disguise it further, it was usually smothered in metallic
tasting gravy. Most referred to this dish as mystery meat. I am
not suggesting your current problems were caused by being
allergic to that gourmand's delight. Instead, I am disguising
this section hoping to whet your curiosity so that your reaction
will not be to skip this chapter. For the problem I intend to
discuss, the truth is usually a mystery. Allergies sneakingly
cause many symptoms that are commonly classified as therapy
symptoms, including all those listed in the above paragraph.
(Of course, allergies are not the only possible cause of the
above symptoms.) It may be surprising to learn that many, if not most of our
food allergies, are a total mystery to us. This goes against the
common idea that whatever I am allergic to will give me a big
rash, hives or other dramatic reactions after every exposure.
This common idea about allergies describes one variety of food
allergy, fixed allergy (though our bad reactions may not be
dramatic). If our reactions to an offending food are strong only
if we have recently eaten too much of it, then this suggests a
cyclic allergy. Usually, we know our fixed and cyclic food
allergies.
Addictive allergies, however, are often a mystery. They are
nevertheless very real. What are addictive allergies? The
following quotation is from Five Day Allergy Relief System
(Mandell and Scanlon 1980, 37):
You may have a type of allergy in which you eat the same foods
quite frequently and have developed an allergic type of
addiction (an addictive allergy). Most people with food
addiction are completely unaware that this process is taking
place in their body. If an addicted person misses a meal that
would normally include the food to which he is allergic,
allergic-addictive withdrawal symptoms appear. To avoid the
discomfort of a withdrawal reaction, a person has to keep eating
the food to which he is allergic to stave off withdrawal
symptoms. Dr. Rinkel described this blocking phenomenon, where
the appearance of symptoms is prevented by the repeated
exposures to the offending substance, as masking.
|
Almost ANY "psychological" symptom can be caused by food allergies/ intolerances. Have you tested yourself for these allergies/ intolerances? |
So why bother learning about such allergies if the withdrawal
symptoms are not apparent? Although withdrawal symptoms may be
masked, other symptoms resulting from continued eating of such
foods could be what you consider your most significant
psychological symptoms!
The list at the beginning of this chapter is a Pandora's box of
problems typically considered the province of therapists. Of
course, there is no guarantee that addictive food allergies are
causing your problem(s) on that list, but isn't it worth your
time and energy to find out? People like you and me unknowingly
waste time and money on therapists/doctors for relief of these
problems.
